Bikemotions: Discover the grandeur of Catalonia by bike

sustainable travel
It doesn’t get much better than the combination of relaxed cycling through gentle rolling hills and picturesque vineyards. Enjoy a memorable day biking through Penedès region, the largest wine region in Catalonia, enjoying sustainably-grown wines along the way.

Explore the Penedes region slowly, as any wine region is meant to be experienced. The relaxed rhythm of the bicycle allows you to absorb all of the details of the landscape, from the wind moving the leaves of the vineyards to the captivating smells of fields of fruit and olive trees, all with Montserrat as a backdrop.

Bikemotions does not engage in competitive cycling, road cycling or extreme MTB. Their focus is and has always been on the adventure of discovering the charms of a territory, getting to really know its natural and cultural attractions, by self-guided and guided tours on traditional or electric bikes.  And you are in luck, because in Penedes the culture is centered around delicious local food and ecological wine.

“We wanted to encourage people to minimize the environmental impact of their travels by reducing the carbon emissions footprint”

A commitment to sustainable tourism

Bikemotions from day one made a strong commitment to the environment and is a passionate ambassador for promoting the bicycle as an ecological, sustainable and efficient means of transport, as well as being quiet, healthy and respectful to the natural environment.  The Bike Centre is conveniently located right at the Lavern-Subirats railway station. As Ester Boada of Bikemotions explains, “We wanted to encourage people to minimize the environmental impact of their travels by reducing the carbon emissions footprint”.

BIOSPHERE certified

Because of their environmentally-friendly philosophy, Bikemotions is proud to have been awarded the BIOSPHERE certification. This internationally-recognized certification is only given to operators whose company supports an adequate long-term balance between the economic, socio-cultural and environmental dimensions of a destination.

Ecologically-friendly wine

Bikemotions vets their suppliers diligently. Most of the wineries they visit on their tours are small, family-run, ecological wineries (some are even biodynamic) that work with increasingly sustainable practices and produce organic wines. During the visit they have the opportunity to explain their philosophy, both in terms of viticulture and the production of the wines and/or cavas they make. Their winemaking process protects the environment and supports social responsibility.

Delicious local food

It’s never a good idea to bike and drink wine on an empty stomach! Bikemotions always tries to activate the local economy by offering seasonal and “zero-mile” produce on their tours. The tours usually include a visit to a winery with a wine and/or cava tasting, which are accompanied by a small locally-produced snack of olives, cheese, and artisanal sausage. Bikemotions co-owner Ester encourages bikers to stay for lunch at one of the wineries “To enjoy a wider variety of local products such as the famous peaches from l’Ordal, native poultry like the Penedès black rooster and duck, flavorful seasoned salads such as xató, and an excellent pastries like cocas, catànies or artisan nougat.”  You’ve convinced us, Ester!

Multicultural exchange

By adopting an eco-friendly mindset on your travels, you will be helping to protect Penedes, not only for yourself and future travelers, but also for those who continue to live there long after you have left. Come slowly, travel through Penedes by bike and enjoy the opportunities to get to know the locals and culture in a more respectful and personal way.
