The route takes place in the border area between Peschici and Vieste, characterized by the scents of Mediterranean scrub and Aleppo pines.
Its appearance is thick and bushy enough to leave little room even for herbaceous species; here formations of lentisk, rosemary, capers and myrtle intertwine. It is the green, fragrant and glossy scrub, colonizing sandy beaches, jagged coastlines and coastal dunes. Unlike the scrub, which is more diverse in species, coastal pine forests are identified primarily with a typically Mediterranean conifer: the Aleppo pine, easily recognized by its reddish-brown bark with a twisted trunk and, at times, reaching out into the void or clinging to white limestone cliffs. The foliage is fluffy and light green in color.
Along the way you will stop at “Riparo Sfinalicchio” , without a doubt, the best and most articulate expression of graffitied and engraved wall art, currently known, in southern Italy. The engravings, chronologically referable to distinct and particular moments of the late Paleolithic, occupy more than half of the back wall and are distributed along a front of m. 3.70.
Continuing in the direction of the road, one arrives near the Bay of Sfinale, a picturesque inlet bordered on the left side by a square-shaped tower known as the “Tower of Sfinale,” part of the system of watchtowers and defense towers located along the coast. The towers were built around the mid-1500s and arose in emerging, highly panoramic positions with the specific task of sighting and signaling the arrival of the Turks, who posed a continuous threat to the territory, plundering and looting it.
